How To Get Rid Of Head Lice Permanently

How to get rid of lice permanently

How to get rid of head lice permanently is a dilemma I encountered when my daughter and I got head lice.

When my kid first came home from school with a letter stating she had lice, I was shocked and horrified. And then, I caught lice from my kid. No one in my family had ever had lice and we’re Black. My first thought was how did this happen – Black people don’t get lice. It’s both true and untrue. We’ll come back to this point later.

What is Lice

Head lice (pediculus humanus capitis) is a wingless parasite that lives on the human scalp, feeding off of human blood. They can not live more than a day without being attached to the host. They crawl and spread from one person to another through the sharing of hats, towels, combs and through head to head contact. The female louse lays 3-5 eggs a day called nits.

Lice Treatments

The most common treatment used in the riddance of head lice are over the counter concoctions. They contain harsh ingredients and head lice have become immune to what is on the market. There is a strong prescription available, but it also contains harsh ingredients. None of these can be used on very young children nor get rid of life permanently

What did not work

After two rounds of using over the counter box concoction and long bouts of nitpicking. we still had lice. It didn’t work. We then tried all the natural “cures” that folks were telling us about – olive oil, coconut oil, tea tree oil — none worked.

What did work

After thinking hard about the ½ myth that Black people didn’t get lice, I realized why. Black people use to always used heavy hair grease. With the rise of the “natural hair movement the use of hair grease had gone out of style. I had stopped using hair grease also opting for more “natural.”

I rushed to the nearest Walmart and bought a large jar of Grease. The tried and true of Black Haircare of a bygone era (now making a comeback). I believed that I discovered how to get rid of head lice permanently.

How I did it

Blue Magic Hair Grease had always been a staple of black hair care in the past. I parted the hair in four quarters and then took each quarter starting in the back and greased both the scalp and length of hair with a generous amount of grease. I put each quarter in braids.

At the 1 week mark, I rebraided with more grease. At the 2 week mark, I would wash the hair thoroughly and repeat the process. For another two weeks. All seemed great after that, but I did it again the next month and all was clear.

It has been 9 years and we haven’t had an issue with lice since then even with lice breakouts in school as I knew to keep a bit a grease in my daughter’s hair as she went to school.

How to survive a nuclear attack is at the top of the concerns of Americans amid the increasing war of words between North Korea and the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will conduct a briefing January 16th “Public Health Response to a Nuclear Detonation,” to detail how to prepare for nuclear war.

“While a nuclear detonation is unlikely, it would have devastating results and there would be limited time to take critical protection steps,” states the excerpt from the CDC’s website.

The CDC also states that all the information is crucial to increase survival, “For instance, most people don’t realize that sheltering in place for at least 24 hours is crucial to saving lives and reducing exposure to radiation.”

War Of Words

As we know, the war of words of nuclear prowess between North Korean  Kim Jong-un and  President Donald Trump has escalated.

President Trump tweeted Tuesday night, boasting his “nuclear button” is  “much bigger & more powerful” than North Korea’s.

World leaders have expressed their worry in recent days as the U.S.  edges closer to nuclear war with North Korea.

Besides knowledge of  how to survive a nuclear attack, having the correct gear and supplies is crucial. Survival experts recommend having a bugout bag and at least 2 -3 weeks of food and water to last for each person.
