Nikia Smith was arrested for dropping her children off at the Cobb County, Georgia Department of Family and Children Services office and telling them (the children) that she didn’t want them. According to staff, the three children – six, twelve, and fourteen was visibly upset. Because it was the end of the day, staff urged her to take her children and return the following day.
Marietta police officer stated that a call was made to her that she was told to return or she would be arrested. The mother responded that she would prefer to go to jail than to take her children back, according to police.
Smith later explained that she left her children because of her 14-year -old daughter had a mental disability and she could no longer afford the medication. The children were all taken into protective custody, and Smith was eventually arrested.
Desperation and despair lead to such actions. We need to handle such cases with compassion. As more of the safety net is dismantled we will see more of such cases.
